2009-09 dream weekend soiree

the invites are out… aren’t they lovely? flower printed handkerchiefs – the perfect way to set the tone for a garden dinner party. and not just any garden dinner party… a goodbye party for summer – it is september now, after all.

it’s going to be a lovely party. how could it not be? wildflowers dancing in blue mason jars – is there anything more charming? it’s still quite warm out and the night sky will be clear… the perfect kind of clear to hang lots of stars. the stars will sparkle next to our hanging mason jar candles.

and everyone is bringing a book – their favorite book to exchange for another. because it’s our last reminder of summer – those long lazy days in the sunshine with a book…. so we’ll hold onto that simple pleasure for a few more weeks.

there’s only one thing that worries me a little. i have sweet blood. and this is never really problem, you see, until a well-meaning skeeter (mosquito, naturally) finds himself near me… because then that well-meaning little guy loses his well-meaning manner and just gets…. well. mean. so i’ve come up with a solution – citronella. i didn’t have any citronella candles, so i made a few to keep those well-meaning critters well out of my range… just in case they are still hanging around – still trying to hold onto the best parts of summer as fall creeps in. i can’t blame them at all, but i can do my best to steer clear of them. anyway, i found a tutorial for diy citronella here.

and so it’s all set then… now i just pop open a crisp bottle of chardonnay and wait for everyone to arrive…

or wait until i tire of envisioning my beautiful dreamy evening… although once i do i will start dreaming up next weekend. because although i may not have the resources (grad student = poor), the chef’s touch (unless grilled cheese counts – i make a mean grilled cheese!) or the backyard for such loveliness, I have an imagination that knows no limit…..

wait.

i forgot one detail.

one VERY important detail.
